We are all created to love life, originally not to ever die. That is why the most sickly person most often than not clings desperately to life. But what happens when one suddenly realises that life is about ebbing away due to illness, and that perhaps there is something that could be done about it?
For those who don´t know anything about this series, here is a summary of the heart of the story:Walt, a honest, capable Chemistry teacher discovers he has lung cancer. He needs money, lots of it which he doesn't have for treatment. Coincidentally he has been offered an opportunity to use his Chemistry knowledge in manufacturing methylene, a deadly drug that addicts covet so much.
He accepts this offer so as to make money, both for his treatment, and something to leave behind for his family.
Let us jump-frog to Season 2, episode 9- "4 Days Out": All Walt could realize up till this moment cooking meths is $9,960.00 clean profit.(So big an amount that will buy the family a Subaru, joked Saul). Walt implored they (him and Jesse)will have to head to the desert to cook a lot more.
This they did, and in the scorching sun they succeeded cooking forty-two pounds of the substance. This would fetch each of them $672,000 ! Even for Walter who believed he had only a few weeks to live it was time for celebration. But was it?
Alas! It was not yet time for joy. Jesse had made blunders as usual-he had drained the battery by leaving the key in the ignition. The generator was blown, water extinguished. It seemed they might die in this desert that was 20-40 kilometers away from any human-being.
What a heart breaking scene, watching both Jesse and Walt trying desperately to resurrect the generator in the scorching sun.Things indeed had fallen apart completely, especially for Walt. He regreted the lies he had been feeding his family since.
Life was now pragmatically ebbing away from Walt, not even because of the cancer, but hopelessness of the situation. As he closed his eyes, Jesse´s screeching voice woke him up: It was no time to cry like baby, but time to think and use his scientific mind.
Yes,the scientific and creative mind of Walt sprang to action! Excitement mixed with desperation, Walt shouted at Jesse to bring things- bolts, nuts, coins, anything. They eventually labored and built to conquer the circumstance. They drove the RV back to Albuquerque in one piece.
This episode is one of the best in the series as it makes one laugh, cry and then sigh with a smile. The best way to appreciate this episode is to watch it. Was Walt going to really die in a few weeks? Find out by yourself.
